D & T

"Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves."

Romans 12:10

Intent

Our Design Technology curriculum works hand in hand with the ever changing and advancing technologies around us in our lives today. It intends to share the importance of design and technology for future generations. Our pupils are equipped to explore and test their own ideas and designs. Design Technology is a subject that develops children’s skills and knowledge in: design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control, working with a range of materials as well as with food.

We are passionate about creativity at Aspull Church and through this subject our pupils have the opportunity to combine this creativity with practical skills, thus enabling them to create a product from the starting ideas and sketches to the final design. At Aspull Church, we value the importance of design technology and aim to incorporate the explicit skills taught within other areas of our school curriculum.

Implementation

All of our pupils in both Key 1 & 2 develop their knowledge, skills and understanding through the designing, making, evaluating and understanding the technical knowledge process. At Aspull Church, our planning creates motivation and enthusiasm through a range of Design Technology that, where applicable, links to other areas of our curriculum, such as our Geography or History based learning. Following the design process, all pupils create a product following given design criteria on which they can test and improve ideas. Pupils have the opportunity to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills by designing a product for a specific purpose. Pupils are encouraged to work collectively, especially during the research process and then individually to create their own designs. Pupils use a sketch book when working so they can see their learning journey, this allows them to edit and improve throughout this journey. Design Technology is a valuable subject that draws on other subjects such as Mathematics, English, Science, Computing and Art.

Impact

Design Technology lets children be creative, challenge concepts and take risks to make a product they can see, touch and even taste for a given purpose. It proves a sense of ownership of their work, achievement and pride. It develops and enhances specific explicit skills and knowledge and is a learning platform for other subjects.

At the end of each topic, assessment takes place through reflections of the pupils work and teachers assess the children using half termly tracking using Target tracker.

To ensure progression and continuity of Design Technology, monitoring of planning, pupil’s work and pupils voice throughout the year will aid our development within this subject.
